About the museum

The Remfabriken (belt factory) in the Gårda district was originally a factory for belts and ribbons. The first wooden building burned down in May 1900, and the factory management then decided to build a new factory in brick. The main building was built in three storeys, and production was electrified around 1916. No major modernisation took place after that, and production was gradually phased out.

Production ceased in November 1977. The staff switched off the machines and went home, and the factory still looks as it did then. The machinery remains in its original places, with weaving looms on the ground floor and the second floor, and the warp room (varpsalen) with twisting machines on the third floor. The machines were imported from England in the early 1900s, and the original transmissions with shafts and belts remain.

The City of Gothenburg (Göteborgs stad) bought the factory, and in 1984 the building, the machinery and the interior were declared a listed building by the National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet). The Föreningen Göteborgs Remfabrik (Gothenburg Belt Factory Association), formed the year after the closure, runs the museum with voluntary effort. Machines from other closed businesses have also been moved to the factory, including ribbon looms, braiding machines and the lace machines from the lace museum in Gingri. Ribbons, cords and lace made here are sold in the museum shop.
