About the museum
Eskilstuna konstmuseum was in 1937 the first art museum outside the big cities. The initiative came from Eskilstuna konstförening (Eskilstuna Art Association), which ran the museum in the old hospital building at Kyrkogatan 9 from 1871. In 1948 the city of Eskilstuna took over responsibility, and the art association then donated the collection, which consisted of 100 paintings, 17 sculptures and 340 graphic works, to the city.
In summer 2006 the museum moved to Bolinder Munktell's old gear workshop in Munktellstaden, an industrial building from 1917 with a façade designed by the architect Cyrillus Johansson. The building was converted in 2005–2006 and opened to the public on 2 June 2006. Today the collection is housed there, along with three rooms for temporary exhibitions, an educational workshop, an art library, a shop and the Svenskt barnbildarkiv (Swedish Children's Picture Archive).
The collection comprises around 6,200 works, of which 5,000 are drawings, watercolours and graphic works, with emphasis on Swedish 20th-century painting and Nordic and northern European art. The basic exhibition shows about 200 works arranged by themes such as Modernism, Vera Nilsson, Scene, The World and Everyday Life, and Sörmland artists. Since 2007 the museum has also housed the Swedish Children's Picture Archive, a research archive with more than 650,000 children's pictures.
