About the museum
Sörmlandsgården has its origins in a donation from the farmer Erik J Andersson of Gultbrunn (1855–1921), who in 1920 handed over to Eskilstuna town a collection of archaeological finds and everyday objects from the countryside. To show the objects a museum and an environment with rural buildings were needed, and several old houses were bought. The town wanted to tell the story of the local heritage and create a farmstead from the 1800s. Sörmlandsgården opened in 1924, and other open-air museums, with Skansen in Stockholm as the model, were established during the same period.
On Sunday 26 June 1983 a fire broke out that destroyed the cowshed, the loge (barn) and the cart shed; the stable was damaged so badly that it was later demolished. The residential houses survived. Between 1985 and 1987 the lost buildings were replaced with purchased old farm buildings from different parts of Södermanland, and the farm was restored with the help of carpenters and joiners.
Today the houses show how a typical central Swedish farm could look in the mid-1800s. The buildings are owned by Eskilstuna Municipality and managed by Eskilstuna kommunfastigheter (Eskilstuna Municipal Properties). Since 2001 the association Sörmlandsgårdens vänner (Friends of Sörmlandsgården) has run activities on the site, with support from Eskilstuna stadsmuseum. Erik Andersson’s objects are today in the city museum’s collections.
