About the museum
Munktellmuseet is located in Munktellstaden in Eskilstuna, a historic industrial district where Johan Theofron Munktell started his mechanical workshop in 1832. The company grew into one of the country’s largest and made, among other things, machine tools, steam engines, portable steam engines (lokomobiler), locomotives and tractors. The museum opened in 1991 by Bengt Ohlin, former information manager, and Jarl Hellicius, former personnel manager. Initially the exhibition area measured 1,700 m².
Today the museum is owned by Volvo Construction Equipment, and the exhibition area is about 3,000 m². The premises were previously used for engine testing, design and machining. A large part of the veteran machines was already owned by the company before the museum was founded.
The collection consists of about 200 objects: old engines, machine tools, tractors and construction machines that together show almost 200 years of Swedish industrial history. Children can climb on and try out several of the machines, and there is a simulator for excavators and loaders. A newer interactive exhibition shows Volvo CE’s innovations and future technology.
