About the museum
The writer, folklife researcher and physician August Bondeson grew up in a red cottage with white corners by Vessige church and parsonage. His parents, Carl and Lisa Bondeson, had the house built in 1855, and Bondeson himself called the childhood home Fågelboet (the bird's nest). The house was solidly built for a craftsman by the standards of the time.
In 1936 Bondeson's nephew Håkan Bondeson gave the house, the plot and the furnishings to the museum in Varberg. The buildings are almost unchanged since August's time. The outbuilding was moved in 1939 when the country road was widened, and the house received a tiled roof in the mid-1930s. The garden was laid out in the mid-1990s and has old-fashioned flowers and herbs.
August Bondeson was born in 1854 and died in 1906 in Gothenburg. He published, among other works, Halländska sagor (Tales from Halland) and the novel about the schoolteacher John Chronschough's memoirs, and he collected objects, songs and stories on journeys through several provinces.
