About the museum
Falkenbergs hembygdsmuseum (Falkenberg Local History Museum) is located on S:t Lars Kyrkogata just behind St Laurentius Church, in one of the old town's well-preserved houses. The farm was long known as Elsnerska färgaregården (the Elsner dyer's farm), after the dyer Casten Elsner, who ran a dye works there at the end of the 1800s. The street building is probably an extension of an older single-storey house from the first years of the 1800s, and the plot, which once extended all the way down to the shore of the Ätran river, was partitioned in 1963.
The collection comprises about 4,000 registered objects and archive materials that reflect life in the Falkenberg area during the 1700s and 1800s, with elements of archaeology, natural history, maritime history and costume history. The owner is Falkenberg Municipality, the manager is the Rian museum, and the objects are shown in cooperation with Falkenberg's culture and local history association. The permanent exhibition is arranged in about ten rooms and preserves the classic museum setting from the refurbishment in the 1990s.
The museum includes a garden where visitors can sit. The buildings form part of an area of national interest for cultural environment conservation (riksintresse för kulturmiljövården).
