About the museum

Fotomuseet Olympia is located in Falkenberg's first cinema, which opened in 1912. The premises have been restored to the 1912 setting according to the Hallandsmodellen (Halland model), a labour-market project that trains craftsmen in older building techniques. The interior painting is done in linseed-oil paint and size paint, so the house is an attraction in itself.

The collection shows the development of photography from the 1840s onwards, with emphasis on unique cameras from different eras: studio cameras on wooden stands, miniature cameras, the first amateur cameras, tropical cameras and equipment for stereo photography. There are also laterna magicas (magic lanterns), cinematographs and film posters, as well as some of Sweden's oldest preserved colour photographs, autochrome pictures from 1907.

The museum has a large picture collection from Falkenberg and the Falkenberg area. A collection of studio equipment belonging to the Värmland photographer Axel Aurelius and his wife Freja, who grew up in Falkenberg, also belongs to the museum. Rolf Håkansson has built up the collection.
