About the museum
The Vasa Museum on Djurgården in Stockholm displays the Regalskeppet Vasa, which was built at Skeppsgården in Stockholm to become one of the Swedish navy's leading warships. On 10 August 1628 the ship sank quickly on her maiden voyage, and she was raised more than 300 years later.
Vasa was salvaged and excavated in the early 1960s, and the ship is today one of the best-preserved 17th-century ships in the world. The exhibitions let visitors follow the building of the ship, the disaster, the salvage and life on board a warship.
The museum has a very special climate: to preserve Vasa a temperature of 18–20 °C is required, so it can feel cool inside the ship hall. In the exhibitions the museum tells the story of the ship, of the people who built and sailed in her, and of the modern work of conserving wood that has lain underwater for a long time.
The Vasa Museum is run by the Swedish National Maritime and Transport History Museums. The building also houses a restaurant and a shop, and the sister museum Vrak is a three-minute walk away.
