About the museum
HMS Sprängaren was built at Motala verkstad (Motala Works) and launched on 12 June 1918. She belonged to the Sökaren class, three versatile ships acquired with funds left over from the 1912 armoured ship collection (Pansarbåtsinsamlingen). They were used to lay and sweep mines, to tow and break ice, and could carry a 57 mm gun. Sprängaren and Sveparen took part in the salvage of the royal ship Vasa in 1959.
The ship was decommissioned in 1962 and then used as a tug in Varberg harbour under the name Klåback. In 1973 she came into private ownership together with her sister ship Sveparen, and in 2007 she was taken over by Lennart Segerström and entrusted to the association Vedettbåten Sprängaren. For almost two decades the ship was restored by volunteers, and in 2022 the propeller turned again under her own power.
Today Sprängaren is a living museum which, according to its website, is the only known First World War warship that still runs on its own steam engine. The ship is K-marked and offers ticketed trips, including I Vasas kölvatten (In the Wake of the Vasa), about one hour, and a longer trip to Vaxholm Fortress, as well as charters.
