About the museum

Flatenbergs hytta is a well-preserved bergsman’s ironworks just outside Smedjebacken, by the lake Norra Barken. The works was established around 1600 by eight bergsmän (ironworks owners) from the village of Flatenberg, where each co-owner had a share that determined how much pig iron he was allowed to produce. A hammer forge belonging to the works operated from 1616 to 1857. The ore came from the mines Humboberget, Nyberget, Håksberg and Gräsberg, and the charcoal from the forests nearby.

The iron was transported by boat or horse cart, and in winter it was hauled across the ice towards Stockholm. The present blast furnace was built in 1865 as an extension of the older one, and production then rose from about 1,600 to 3,000 tonnes per year. When demand fell after the First World War, the blast furnace was blown out for the last time on 20 August 1918.

In 1930, when the works was about to be demolished, Karl-Erik Forsslund had it declared a museum. The works has a roasting furnace, a council house (rådstuga) and a blast furnace, and in the machine house there is older equipment such as an ore crusher and a blowing machine. Since summer 2012 a signposted walking trail has run round the area with viewpoints, where older photographs from around 1925 show how the place looked. The works is part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen (the Bergslagen ecomuseum).
