About the museum
Johan Ahlbäck (1895–1973), known as the painter of labour (arbetets målare), depicted working life and environments in Bergslagen in his art. He was the son of a rolling-mill worker in Smedjebacken and worked himself at the Smedjebacken rolling mill before training as an artist and moving back to Smedjebacken in 1931.
The attic floor at Vasagatan 18, where he worked from 1951 to 1973, is today a museum. When he gained access to a larger space in the 1950s, it made his work easier and his pictures became larger. The studio has been preserved in almost unchanged condition and is shown to visitors.
Ahlbäck’s art can also be seen elsewhere: the Ahlbäcksalen (Ahlbäck Hall) at the Werner Aspenström Library shows his paintings, and Smedjebacken Municipality holds the Ahlbäcksdagar (Ahlbäck Days) every year with lectures and the award of the Ahlbäck Prize. The municipality’s website also has three short films in which the studio can be visited digitally.
