About the museum
Smedjebacken harbour has been a hub for transport to and from Västerbergslagen since the Middle Ages. When the Strömsholm canal was completed in 1795, iron and copper from the Bergslagen works gained a navigable route towards Lake Mälaren and Stockholm, and the harbour enjoyed a period of prosperity. Of the older harbour buildings the harbour warehouse remains, along with one of the former at least twenty iron storehouses.
The Wessman-Barkens Järnväg (Wessman-Barken Railway) opened in 1859 as an extension of the transport route towards Ludvika and was built with the unusual track gauge of 1188 mm. The present engine shed was built in 1874, when the locomotive Smedjebacken was delivered. Today a steam locomotive built in 1914 by Orenstein & Koppel stands in the engine shed; it was used from 1933 to 1953 at the Smedjebacken rolling mill.
In summer the engine shed functions as a small museum and exhibition space, mainly for industrial and cultural-history exhibitions. In the harbour warehouse there is, among other things, an exhibition on older boat engines and a small canal museum. The harbour area with the engine shed is part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen, and the steamers Runn and Kuriren from Barkens ångbåtar (Barken Steamboats) have the harbour as their home port.
