About the museum
The Garrison Museum is at Axevalla hed in Axvall and presents more than 500 years of military history with a strong link to the site. The museum has existed in various forms since the late 19th century. The focus is on the Västgöta Regiment, the Skaraborg Regiment and the Göta trängregemente (Göta Supply Regiment).
Axvall was already known in the 14th century as the home of the king’s men at Axevalla hus castle. In 1696 Axevalla hed was chosen as the assembly point for the Skaraborg Regiment, and the heath was afterwards used as a training ground.
The exhibitions show, among other things, the history of the regiments, a soldier’s croft, the horse in the Försvaret (Armed Forces), regimental music and military aviation at Axvall. The exhibition also includes a gunner-driver’s seat from a Stridsvagn 103 tank, horse-drawn wagons from the supply troops and an extensive collection of tin soldiers. The museum also gives access to many photographs via Digitalt museum.
