About the museum

Skara–Lundsbrunns Järnvägar (SkLJ) is a non-profit association that runs museum trains on the routes Skara–Lundsbrunn and Skara–Skara Ost and preserves vehicles and archive material. The line (SKWJ) opened in 1887, and the last freight traffic between Skara and Götene ceased in 1984.

The operation began in 1967, when Skara Municipality took over the steam locomotive SJ Gp 3119, formerly VGJ 29, as a reminder of Skara’s time as a railway junction. The condition was that an association would look after the locomotive. In 1971 the locomotive was fully restored and put back under steam, which is usually seen as the start of the living railway museum. Museum trains ran from 1982 to Götene and from 1984 to Lundsbrunn.

Starting from locomotive 29, the vehicle fleet has grown with passenger carriages, several locomotives, goods wagons, track maintenance vehicles and motor coaches with trailers. The engine shed is in Skara. In summer ordinary trains run on the Skara–Lundsbrunn section, and in autumn special trains such as Tomte trains (tomtetåg) are arranged.
