About the museum
Garphytte Fabriks Aktiebolag was founded in 1906 and began making drawn wire and twisted rope in Garphyttan, at the foot of Kilsbergen. Over time the company became one of the country’s leading manufacturers of valve-spring wire and springs for the motor industry, and today it is known as Suzuki Garphyttan.
The idea of an industrial museum arose in 1988, when the works council discussed preserving something of the old. In autumn 1989 a study circle of pensioners from the company was started, and in 1991 the lower part of the former head office was inaugurated; the company had used it until 1935. The machine hall at the northern end of the old rope works was inaugurated in 1993 and the large hall in 1994.
The museum is in the original industrial building, covers about 1,300 square meters and is run by a non-profit association in honor of the company. In the machine hall stand machines that once made wire and springs, and in the large hall photographs from the company’s start in 1906 to the present are shown, together with local history and an old-fashioned schoolroom. Each year the association takes part in, among other events, the Tysslingedagen (Tysslinge Day) and the Christmas market.
