About the museum
Karlslund is an old manor environment by the Svartån river, about five kilometres west of Örebro. The farm has roots going back to the end of the 1500s, when Duke Karl ruled Närke, and the garden has been cultivated since the early 1600s, when the farm supplied food to the castle in Örebro. Over the years the site has had many owners with new ideas, but also bankruptcies and hard work.
The main building was erected in 1804–1807, probably to drawings by the architect Johan Gustaf Forsgren. It was built on three floors, with a cellar for the kitchen and household, a ground floor that was the family's home and an upper floor intended as a state floor (paradvåning). During the 1800s the farm grew to include, among other things, the farmyard square (ladugårdsfyrkanten), Anckarsvärds magasin (Anckarsvärd's storehouse) from 1834 and a flower house. Diedens lindallé (Dieden's lime avenue) was laid out in 1892, and the power station from 1897 is one of Sweden's oldest.
Today the area is managed as a cultural reserve by Örebro Municipality. Visitors can walk in the garden and park, see the exhibition about the farm's history in Anckarsvärds magasin and book a guided tour. There is a summer café in the main building of the manor, and weddings, dinners and conferences are held there throughout the year.
