About the museum
Garverimuseet is in the village of Sattajärvi, two mil (Swedish mile) south of Pajala, where around 350 people live. It stands on the same site as Kero's tannery and shoemaking workshop, where the company started in 1929. The museum was created to show how the old tanning method worked.
The old village tannery was based entirely on the vegetable method, which uses tanning agents from the plant kingdom, such as bark from spruce, willow and oak. According to the company, Kero's current tannery is the northernmost large tannery in the world focusing on reindeer hides.
