About the museum
Laestadiusmuseet in Pajala consists of the parsonage (prästgård), the red pörte and a herb garden, and tells of the life and work of Provost Lars Levi Laestadius. The pörte was home to Laestadius and his wife Brita Katarina, with family, from 1854, when they moved to Pajala, and Laestadius lived there until his death in 1861. The building is a red log building with an entrance hall (farstu), the pörte (a large kitchen), a milk room and a cottage where Laestadius died.
Next to the pörte stands the yellow residential house, which was built for the family but was completed only half a year after his death. The house served as the parsonage until the 1990s. The pörte and the parsonage are now part of the museum, which is run by Pajala parish (Pajala församling).
On the ground floor of the parsonage there are hymn books and other literature from Laestadius's time, as well as illustrations from his plant collection, which comprises over 6,000 plants from the northern latitudes. In summer there is an interactive nature corner, Britta-Kajsas naturhörna, where guides show plants and scents. In the herb garden, potatoes, swede, angelica (kvanne), horseradish, lovage (libbsticka) and rhubarb are grown, among other things. Books and postcards are sold in the museum.
