About the museum
Grangärde local heritage society (hembygdsförening) was founded in 1924, and in 1929 the society bought land at Sunnansjö, where the homestead museum began to be built up. The first building was a drying barn from Västansjö, donated in 1930. Since then, buildings from across the area have been moved here, among them a stable from Jansbrända, a main farmhouse from Skattlösberg, a threshing lodge from Saxhyttan, a smithy from Saxdalen and Jan-Hans dubbelbod, whose building timber was felled in 1681–82 according to a dendrochronological analysis.
The farm's buildings and collections show, on the one hand, the mining environment that shaped the Grangärde area for three hundred years and, on the other hand, agriculture and forestry, which became the dominant livelihood after the ironworks declined at the end of the 19th century. The immigration of Finnish slash-and-burn settlers in the 17th century is also reflected in the collections. The oldest object is a door from the early 15th century, which probably belonged to the chapel at Grytänge. The textile collection includes clothing for everyday and festive wear, and the Grangärde costume is shown in a special exhibition.
The site also has an archive with, among other things, material from the ironworks era, a coffee house in a fäbod (summer pasture farm) cottage from Vålbodarna, and a dance floor from 1944.
