About the museum
Finngammelgården lies on the highest point of Skattlösberg, in the part of Dalarna where the forest Finns settled in the 1600s. The land was donated by the ironworks owner Carl Reinhold Roth of Ludvika Works to Grangärde Church, but no chapel was ever built. Instead it was leased to Skattlösbergs bygdegille (Skattlösberg Village Guild), which was formed in 1943 to preserve the culture of the Finnish settlers and gathered typical buildings from the district. The County Administrative Board bought the land from Grangärde parish in 2004.
On the site stand, among other things, a Swedish cottage (svenskstuga) from the mid-1800s, which was moved here in 1928; a pörte (smoke house) with the year 1771 carved above the door; the large post storehouse from the 1700s; the Trollstallet (Troll Stable); and a Falu red log house from 1992, which houses the collections of the folklife researcher Otto Blixt, with implements from the Finnish settlements. The buildings are fully furnished, and most of the objects have been donated to the village guild.
A charcoal stack has been left open on one side so that you can see how it is built, and next to it stands a charcoal burner's hut. Every July the Kolbullefesten (charcoal bun festival) is held, with charcoal buns grilled over an open fire. Finngammelgården is part of Ekomuseum Bergslagen.
