About the museum

Hagfors Järnvägsmuseum grew out of the closure of Nordmark–Klarälvens Järnvägar (NKlJ). When the last regular service ended in October 1990, attempts to keep the line running privately failed because of the high costs. Instead, an initiative was taken to preserve the steam locomotives and electric trains in a museum in Hagfors' old engine sheds.

The museum is run by Hagfors Minnesmuseum – Insamlingsstiftelse (Hagfors Memorial Museum – fundraising foundation) on behalf of Hagfors Municipality. The collection includes steam and electric locomotives, among them NKlJ's first locomotive, a Peckett from 1874, steam locomotive number 5 Lovisa Tranæa and Ånghästen (The Steam Horse), a land locomotive (landlok) from the 1860s. There are also electric locomotives from the 1960s, a rail bus and a steam rail bike (ångdressin) from around 1900.

The exhibitions tell the story of the railway and the district's industrial history from 1635 to 1990. Visitors may go into and play on most of the trains. From the museum a rail bike track runs out to Stjärnsfors mill. The engine sheds, where time has stood still since the line was closed, can be shown by arrangement.
