About the museum
The museum is run by Medelpads Fornminnesförening (Medelpad Antiquities Association), which was founded in 1906 to create an equivalent of Skansen for Medelpad. The association started the open-air museum Fornhemmet on Norra Stadsberget and handed over the running of the open-air museum to Sundsvall Municipality in 2001. The museum building was erected in 1942–1944 and lies within the open-air museum Norra Berget.
The museum shows exhibitions on Sundsvall's shipyard industry and seafaring, on crafts such as musical instrument making, bell-founding, copper-smithing and clock-making, on the Sámi of Medelpad, and on hunting weapons from different periods. There are also paintings of ships that had Sundsvall as their home port and often visited the harbour.
The museum's best-known object is the stuffed skvader, a mythical creature that is a mixture of hare and capercaillie. In the Skvaderboden (Skvader Shop) a shop interior from a general store (diversehandel) on Västermalm in Sundsvall, from the 1920s, has been installed.
