About the museum
Svartviks industriminnen (Svartvik industrial heritage site) lies at the mouth of the Ljungan river about 10 kilometers south of Sundsvall. The history began in the 1820s, when the Kungliga Strömrensningskommittén (Royal River-Clearing Committee) established a loading place for floating and shipping sawn timber from the interior. Afterwards, various industries succeeded one another for about 150 years: a shipyard, steam sawmills, a planing mill, a box and wooden-house factory and finally the sulphite works, which for a period was Europe’s largest producer of sulphite pulp. The factory closed in 1974.
After about ten years of decay, the area began to develop into a visitor destination. The industrial heritage site was inaugurated as an EU project in 2002. Sundsvall Municipality, associations and companies work together to preserve and tell the story of the forest-based industry in the Sundsvall district.
On the site there are, among other things, Svartviks herrgård (manor house) from around 1820, wings, farm buildings, the stable with a café and visitor centre, the workshop and smithy, the boiler house, the red storehouse, the water tower, the planing mill, the church and a skittle alley. In the stable the exhibition Från lastageplats till industriminne (From Loading Place to Industrial Heritage) is shown, with a large model of Svartvik in the 1930s. There is also outdoor art and an English park with a kitchen garden.
