About the museum
Tuna hembygdsförening (Tuna local heritage society) was formed in 1932, and the 5.6-hectare heritage area Torkarlsberget was donated in two parts by the couple Hilma and Manne Karlsson from Vattjom. From the start the society collected objects from the district, today about 2,000 of them, and in 1972 staff from the Härnösand County Museum catalogued just over 1,500 of these.
The area has 25 buildings, most of them moved here. First came a storehouse (härbre) from 1673, donated in 1934. The following year what is today the museum, Rännögården, a main farmhouse from the 1790s, was erected. During the assembly, strips of cloth that had been used as sealing between the logs were found, and they turned out to be medieval paintings with church motifs, some of which can be seen in the museum.
The main building, Åstagården, serves as an office, café and meeting room. The area also has, among other things, a log drivers' hut (flottarkoja), a trapper's hut (fångstbod), a smithy, a skäkthus (flax-processing house), a hay-mowing cabin (slåtterstuga), a threshing barn (tröskloge), a church stable (kyrkstall), millstones and a runestone, the Skölestenen, which is one of Medelpad's fourteen.
