About the museum
Jönköpings läns museum is an art and cultural-history museum in central Jönköping. The Stiftelsen Jönköpings läns museum (Jönköping County Museum Foundation) was established on 22 June 1977 by the county council (landstinget), Jönköping municipality and the county’s heritage federation. Today Region Jönköpings län, Jönköping municipality and the heritage federation are the founders. The collections go back to the engineer Algot Friberg, who collected objects on local history.
The museum is housed in a building designed by the architect Carl Nyrén at Dag Hammarskjölds plats. In the building and adjacent to it there are archives, stores, a large picture archive, a studio for the conservation of paintings and a museum park. About 45 people work at the museum, which shows the county’s art and cultural history and has free admission.
The exhibitions include John Bauer’s art, the Viking Age from a Småland perspective and objects from the Stone Age. The museum has a creative workshop for children and young people, an extensive programme of events and tours, and school activities. It is also responsible for cultural-environment work in the county and for the exhibition on the history of Jönköping town in the Arkivhuset (the Archive House).
