About the museum
Huskvarna stadsmuseum is in the Kruthuset (Gunpowder House), which was built in 1771 to store gunpowder for the Husqvarna gunpowder works. Huskvarna hembygdsförening (Huskvarna Local Heritage Association) was given the right of use of the building in 1939, and ten years later, in 1949, it opened as a museum.
When the E4 was built along lake Vättern in the 1960s, the house stood in the way and was moved a short distance in 1965. The heavy brick structure was rolled to its new place in a single day after several weeks of preparation, and in connection with the move the building was given a cellar.
The museum tells the local history of Huskvarna, from the first settlements to the industrial town. The exhibitions cover Husqvarna AB and the Borstfabriken (brush factory), gunpowder production and the weapons industry, the clothing company JUNEX and the development of sport in Huskvarna. A separate exhibition deals with the medieval fortress Rumlaborg, and in the cellar are shown, among other things, finds from the bed of lake Vättern and slide shows on the cultural history of the southern Vättern region.
