About the museum
Klädesholmens museum opened in 1995 in an old canning factory. In 2020 it moved to Sillens hus at Strandgatan 12B, where the island’s grocery shop is also located. The work is done entirely on a voluntary basis. The museum shows the history and development of Klädesholmen with a focus on fish and herring preparation from about 1860 up to today’s modern industry. Attached to the museum is a documentation department with pictures, film and interviews, and the archive is being digitised continuously.
The exhibition tells, among other things, about the long-line fishing that Klädesholmen’s fishermen carried on at the Shetland Islands, about how ling became lutfisk, and about how the island’s herring boats visited almost all Swedish harbours to sell fish and herring products. The trade from the boats was replaced by the canning industry, which today produces about 40 per cent of all Swedish herring cans. The museum also has a small shop that sells books about Klädesholmen and the booklet Kläsholmska.
