About the museum
The association De seglade för Tjörn (Those Who Sailed for Tjörn) was founded in 1976 with the aim of preserving memories of Tjörn's seafaring culture. The association was given the chance to take over one of the oldest houses in Skärhamn, the so-called Cherlin house (Cherlinska huset), and in summer 1977 the maritime museum was inaugurated. There the association could begin documenting the island's seafaring with pictures, models, objects and writings.
The house was built in 1872 by the couple Nilena and Anders Eliasson. For its time it was large, with a parlour, a front room and a kitchen, and the stove with its so-called gruva is in its original condition. The interior has not changed since the house was built in the 1870s. The couple had nine children, among them Edvard, who later took the name Cherlin.
Today the museum shows pictures, books, sailing-ship objects, engines and navigation and fishing equipment. It is run by the association, which celebrated 50 years in 2026.
