About the museum
Mollösund, at the far south-western tip of Orust, is one of Bohuslän’s oldest fishing villages, with roots going back to the Middle Ages. The local history museum is in a fisherman’s cottage from the late 18th century and is run by the museum section of Föreningen Mollösund (Mollösund Association). The association was formed in 1945 to preserve the well-known windmill on Kvarnberget.
In the rooms of the cottage visitors can see how people furnished their homes in earlier times. In the Sjöfartsrummet (maritime room) there are navigation instruments as well as paintings and models of fishing boats and sailing ships. The museum also has a well-stocked library focusing on fishing and seafaring.
The oldest objects date from the 1300s and show that trade and seafaring took place in Mollösundet several hundred years before Mollösund was established as a fishing village in the 1500s. The collection includes, among other things, a Rostock witten (a coin), a coin from the North German trading league, the Hanseatic League (Hansan), which was found in a garden in the village, and a clay jug that came up from a wreck from the 1300s off the lighthouse in the northern part of the sound.
The association also runs the Sjöbodsmuseet (boathouse museum) at the guest harbour, the museum shop Siggurdes på Gatan and the mill on Kvarnberget.
