About the museum

Korså bruk (Korså Ironworks) was established by the Korsån river after Stora Kopparbergs Bergslag was granted permission in 1838 to build an ironworks there. The works began operations in 1841, processing pig iron from Ågs hytta into bar iron, and in 1847 Lancashire forging was introduced with good results. The bar iron was transported across the lakes Hinsen and Hyen to the railway and on to Gävle.

Iron production ceased in 1930, and the works environment has been preserved with its large water wheels. The hammers and the blowing machine that were driven by the water wheels remain, as does a Lancashire forge, which according to Falu Gruva is the last one still in use in Dalarna. Much of the old works environment remains, for example the works shop (brukshandeln), the school house and the mission house.

A small museum shows models of how the works looked when it was operating, together with tools and objects from the period. In the old laundry house, in the same building as the museum, a film about the works in the early 1900s is shown. Korså manor (herrgård), where the works owner lived, is today a bed and breakfast with a summer café. The site is part of Falu Gruva's Järnets väg (Iron Road).
