About the museum
Långshyttans Brukshistoriska Förening (Långshyttan Works History Association) was formed in the autumn of 1983 to keep the history of iron and of the works community alive. The association has about 450 members and organises excursions, lectures, exhibitions and gatherings in and around its buildings: the Bengtsgården local heritage homestead with the BengtsBoa shop, the Mulltimmerhyttan and the Hyttsmedjan (furnace smithy).
The Mulltimmerhyttan is a blast furnace with outer walls of stone and timber, filled with stone and mull (humus) for insulation. The furnace is eight metres high, and the year 1759 is carved into a stone at the corner of the furnace. A furnace (hytta) has stood on the site since the early 1700s, and the furnace was blown out for good in 1861, after producing about 2,000 tonnes of pig iron a year. The furnace's various floors, among them the kransen and the rådstugan, can be studied.
The Hyttsmedjan, the association's tourist and light smithy, was inaugurated in the autumn of 2000 in a building from the large furnace of 1861. Smiths show their craft, and visitors can try smithing for themselves. The work is run on a voluntary basis, and in Bengtsgården the BengtsBoa shop sells ironwork and other objects.
