About the museum
The Arvid Backlund-gården in the village of Kyrkbyn in Svärdsjö was the home of the sculptor Arvid Backlund. Backlund was born in 1895 in Svärdsjö and became best known as a portrait sculptor. He trained in Stockholm and Copenhagen and worked for most of his professional life in Stockholm. His most widely distributed work, Såningsmannen (The Sower) from 1969, stands by Svärdsjö church, not far from the farm.
Backlund had the farm built in the mid-1920s as a summer home close to his childhood home. Over the years the house was extended and became his permanent home, and that of his wife Ester. In 1975 the couple gave the farm to Svärdsjö Local Heritage Association, but they continued to live there until Arvid Backlund’s death in 1985. Falun Municipality owns the farm, and the local heritage association runs the operation.
The collection includes bronze and stone sculptures, reliefs, plaster models, portrait sculptures of well-known Swedish artists, Nobel laureates, business leaders and cultural figures, as well as some church art. The living quarters also contain a large collection of works by Backlund’s artist friends. In summer, exhibitions with visiting artists are held, and on some evenings there are various cultural programs.
