About the museum
Kristofers in Stene by Järvsö has been in the same family for at least fourteen generations, and agricultural and forestry work is still actively carried on here. The old building (Gammelbyggnaden), erected in 1807, is Hälsingland's oldest two-storey house on a farm and is almost unchanged on the outside. The house's brokvist has the form typical of Järvsö.
The present interior dates from the 1850s. The folk painter (allmogemålare) Anders Ädel made imaginative flower paintings freely, as he went along. The encounter with the festivity is built up room by room: in the front hall there are simple stencils, and further in the paintings become richer, until in the festive hall, where the wedding banquets were held, the decorations bloom out in full.
Kristofers is one of the seven Hälsingegårdar inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2012. The farm is privately owned and is shown in summer by advance booking.
