About the museum
Ljusdalsbygdens museum bases its work on the traces left by the people who live and have lived in the district. The museum has filled archives and storerooms with objects, photographs and documents from the area, and works extensively with education, including the programme Spåra tiden (Trace the Time) for school classes and the Slöjdverkstan (Craft Workshop) for children and young people, which since 1995 has documented and tried out older practical skills.
The first museum building opened in 1963 following a joint effort by private individuals, associations, companies and the five municipalities of the time. The foundation was a bequest from Karin Jonsson, known as Hans Ers-Karin, who died in 1943 and left large parts of her fortune to Ljusdals Fornminnes- och Hembygdsförening (Ljusdal Antiquities and Local Heritage Association) for a fireproof building for the homestead museum’s objects.
In 2017 the museum began to move from its old premises near the church to Ljusdal’s old dairy in the middle of the town. The first parts of the new premises opened to the public at the end of June 2019, and further exhibition and activity rooms have opened gradually. The museum also has a weaving room, and films from the district, for example from the last log drive (flottning) on the Ljusnan in 1967, are held in the museum’s film archive.
