About the museum
Stenegård in Järvsö took shape from 1856, when the pharmacist Julius Brun bought two farms and began building a model farm with a pharmacy and a doctor's surgery. The building work went on for more than thirty years. The site also had a long history as a post-horse station and inn (gästgiveri) on the pilgrim route to Nidaros.
During the 20th century the farm changed owners several times. From 1935 to 1963 it was run as a hotel, and in 1969 Ljusdal municipality took it over. The farm was then developed into a craft centre. The herb garden and kitchen garden were laid out in 1990, and Hälsinglands Träteater opened in 1996.
Today the area is owned by Ljusdal municipality and run together with private and voluntary operators. Since 2013 one of the Hälsingland visitor centres for the Hälsingegårdar World Heritage site has been based here. Lill-Babs museum, which opened in 2019, moved to Kvarnen in July 2025 and shares premises with the visitor centre. The farm is a listed building (byggnadsminne) and comprises some fifteen preserved buildings.
