About the museum
Kulturen i Lund was founded in 1882 as Kulturhistoriska föreningen för södra Sverige (the Cultural History Society for Southern Sweden), and in the same year Georg Karlin and helpers began collecting objects. The association bought its first property, Herrehuset, in 1890, and the museum opened to the public in 1892. Kulturen is today a non-profit association with more than 6,000 members. It is a regional museum, a county museum (länsmuseum), which receives annual operating grants from Region Skåne and Lund Municipality, and which also runs Kulturens Östarp in Sjöbo Municipality.
The museum spans two blocks in central Lund, next to the cathedral. Here are historic buildings, some of which still stand on their original sites and some of which have been moved here, for example Herrehuset, Dekanhuset, a wooden church from the 17th century, Västra Vrams prästgård from the mid-18th century and Blekingegården. The houses contain homes and settings from the 18th century to the 1930s, and around them lie gardens and a play park.
The exhibitions show, among other things, Lund in the Middle Ages, rural life and folk costumes in Skåne, middle-class living 1500–1900, women’s fashion, books, glass, textiles and weapons. The collections reflect the life and everyday existence of the town and the region over several centuries, and the museum runs programmes for all ages as well as school activities.

The northern area is reached via a tunnel and stairs under Adelgatan; those who cannot use stairs can enter through the Gröna grinden (Green Gate) with a day code issued by the staff. The open-air museum has gravel paths and cobbled streets, which can be difficult by wheelchair, and several historic houses have high thresholds. Most exhibitions are reached by ramp or lift, sometimes by a detour. Several buildings have accessible toilets. The auditorium has a hearing loop. Only guide dogs and assistance dogs may come in.
