About the museum
Läckö castle on the shore of Lake Vänern has medieval origins. In 1298 Bishop Brynolf Algotsson of Skara had a fortified stronghold founded on the site; it lay in the middle of the diocese at the time and also served as a resting place for pilgrims on their way to Nidaros (Trondheim). After a fire in the 1470s the stronghold was extended by Bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson. After the Reformation in 1527 it was no longer a bishop's castle, and the crown took over the castle.
During the 16th century Läckö was administered by various noblemen, and Hogenskild Bielke received the castle as a barony in 1571. The castle's greatest transformation took place in the 17th century, when Jacob De la Gardie and then his son Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie rebuilt and extended it. During Magnus Gabriel's time the bishop's castle became a Baroque palace with lavish halls, ceiling paintings, sculptures and a castle church.
Today Läckö slott is one of Sweden's best-preserved castle complexes. Most of the interior dates from the De la Gardie era, and the halls are furnished with objects from the state art collections managed by Nationalmuseum. In the Kungssalen (King's Hall) thirteen angels still hang from the ceiling. The castle is run by Stiftelsen Läckö Slott (the Läckö Castle Foundation), which also operates a naturum, an inn, a campsite and a guest harbour on the site, and arranges the summer exhibitions and opera performances.
