About the museum

Levanders lanthandel (country store) in the small village of Alseda was founded in 1864. In 1920 Erik Levander took over the business, and he ran the shop for fifty years, until 1970. The building dates from the 1890s.

The interior is genuinely preserved, with grain-painted counters and shelves, and spice scents can still be detected from the drawers. Preserved candy tins, bottles, posters, signs, packaging, catalogues, wooden barrels and many other objects reflect the shop's long history and convey a sense of a bygone era when goods were bought over the counter and sold loose by weight.

Today the country store is a museum, a gift shop with delicacies and interior items, and a small café serving home-baked cakes. The business is run in a private home, and visitors are asked to be considerate.
