About the museum
Ekenässjöns hembygdsförening was formed in the late 1980s, when the old smithy dwelling Malma from the 1850s was threatened with demolition to make way for a wider road. Vetlanda Municipality let the house stand on condition that residents formed an association to look after the plot, and the smithy cottage became the association’s local heritage farm. The association’s first annual meeting was held on 21 March 1988.
The first museum building was the Industrial Museum, and then the Nostalgia Museum, the Music and Instrument Museum and an art salon with hand-embroidered bonader (traditional wall hangings) were added. The Industrial Museum shows the district’s industries in miniature models, including the glassworks, and many of the models are electrically driven and can be seen in motion. The Glassworks Museum tells the story of Ekenäs glassworks, its designers and the glass objects donated to the association.
The Nostalgia Museum shows technical and everyday changes during the 20th century in many moving models. The Music and Instrument Museum has a large collection of instruments and gramophone records and tells the story of the district’s musical life and instrument making, including at Nordiska Pianofabriken. The collections reflect Ekenässjön as an industrial community in the 20th century.
