About the museum

Mårtagården is a so-called captain's farm (kaptensgård), built in 1780 by the skipper Lars Jönsson Rydberg and his wife after a successful voyage to Madeira and the Mediterranean. The farm bears witness to the heyday of peasant seafaring at Onsala, when farming and long-distance shipping went hand in hand. The present appearance, with three wings around a farmyard, dates from rebuilding in 1879–80.

The last user, Knut Larsson, bequeathed Mårtagården and the neighbouring Apelhögen in 1961 to the Knut och Tora Larssons stiftelse Mårtagården (Knut and Tora Larsson's Mårtagården Foundation), which still manages the farms and the land. The buildings have been a protected building since 1982, and in 2003 Mårtagården was established as Halland's first cultural reserve (kulturreservat) together with the county administrative board (Länsstyrelsen).

The interior of the living house is almost intact. In summer the foundation arranges viewings of the farm, as well as entertainment and cultural events, including Mårtagårdsdagen (Mårtagården Day) in August and a viewing on Kulturarvsdagen (Heritage Day) in September. Around the farms there are culture and nature trails, and the cultivated landscape is managed as it was in the mid-1900s.
