About the museum
Mangskogs hembygdsgård is called Neragata and lies below the old village street through Takene. According to the land register (jordebok), a farm has existed on roughly the same site for at least 400 years. The main building received its present form in 1783, a date that was found in the attic during a renovation.
The former heritage homestead, Pålstorp in Bjurbäcken, burnt down in June 1947. Neragata was bought in 1952, thoroughly restored and inaugurated in 1955 by County Governor Axel Westling. The kitchen was modernised in 1983 with the help of a donation, and in 1992 the house got new cladding and the outbuildings were overhauled by young people in a labour-market project. Donations in 2009 and 2014 financed further alterations to the kitchen.
Much of the furnishing comes from the home of Nils Keyland in Bjurbäcken. Keyland was an amanuensis and became curator at the Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum) in Stockholm in 1912, where his collections on the slash-and-burn Finns (svedjefinnarna) are kept. Many of his photographs are kept on the farm, mainly of people from the district. They show everyday life among the Finnish newcomers in Mangskog, with hunting and fishing, farming and forestry, healing of illness and sauna bathing.
