About the museum
The Medicinhistoriska museet (Museum of Medical History) is run by Stiftelsen för ett medicinhistoriskt museum i Uppsala (the Foundation for a Museum of Medical History in Uppsala). The principal organisers are Uppsala University, Region Uppsala and Uppsala medicinhistoriska förening (Uppsala Medical History Association). The idea of a museum of medical history was raised on several occasions, and in the 1950s objects began to be collected, among other places from Akademiska sjukhuset (the Academic Hospital) and Biomedicinskt centrum (the Biomedical Centre). The museum celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2005.
The museum is housed in a building from 1900 in the Ulleråker area. Ulleråker was for a long time the site of one of Sweden's largest psychiatric hospitals, and that environment shapes the museum's story.
The exhibitions deal with medical research and practice, technical innovations, home remedies and how medicines were made in pharmacies. The exhibition on the upper floor depicts the history of psychiatry and the life, care and work at Ulleråker Hospital. Among the objects are a pair of roughly 400-year-old obstetric forceps (förlossningstänger) and an early type of ECG machine.
