About the museum

Pumphuset is Uppsala’s first waterworks. The city inaugurated the waterworks and the pumping station in 1875, and the building was designed by the architect Adrian Crispin Peterson. Operations continued until 1968, when a new waterworks took over. The building lies by the Fyrisån near Svandammen and Islandsbron.

In the building there is still a water turbine, electric pumps and pressure bells left from the waterworks’ time. After the house was converted in 2016–2017, an interactive exhibition on water and waste is shown together with the historic machinery.

Today Pumphuset is run by Uppsala Vatten och Avfall AB (Uppsala Water and Waste Ltd) and is used for education on sustainability and history. Each year around 10,000 people visit events in the house, and over 2,000 people come on study visits. The house is open to the public at weekends and during school holidays, and at special events.
