About the museum
Moderna Museet opened on 9 May 1958 in the former Exercishuset on Skeppsholmen. The idea of a house of its own for contemporary art had already been raised in 1908. Otte Sköld, Director General of the Nationalmuseum, together with the association Moderna Museets Vänner (Friends of Moderna Museet), gave the Nationalmuseum's collection of 20th-century art a home of its own. The museum's first exhibition was a showing of Pablo Picasso's Guernica.
The museum is run by a state administrative agency and has the task of collecting, preserving, showing and communicating art from the 20th and 21st centuries in all its forms. It is also a central museum with national responsibility, promotes international contacts through touring exhibitions and is responsible for Swedish participation in art biennials.
Over time the building on Skeppsholmen has been extended, and the museum has acquired a second house in Malmö. The collection is shown in changing presentations, in which artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and the Surrealists have been the focus. The museum also has a library, a cinema, a restaurant and a studio gallery.
The waterside location on Skeppsholmen, with its view over the entrance to Stockholm, is part of the experience, and each year the museum stages several major exhibitions and programmes for all ages.
