About the museum
Munkedals Jernväg was built for the Munkedals paper mill. The mill grew up by the rapids of the Munkedalsälven after Munkedals AB was formed in 1871, and it needed a better way to get its paper bales to the harbour at Saltkällan. After horse-drawn carts and the road locomotive Stuten (“the mare”), a deep-water harbour was built at Skree and a 600-millimetre narrow-gauge railway was laid between the harbour and the mill, a distance of 5.6 kilometres. The first steam train ran on 12 July 1895, and the line was officially opened in December the same year.
From the beginning the line carried passengers and was linked, together with the company’s steamboat to Gothenburg, to the region’s transport links. Over the years more steam locomotives and wagons were bought, among them a brigade locomotive from the First World War and a Mallet locomotive; after the Second World War oil trains ran between the harbour and the railway station.
The original works railway was closed, and the museum association Museiföreningen Munkedals Jernväg took over the operation, starting to run a short stretch as a museum railway in 1983. The association today owns, maintains and runs a line of 3.3 kilometres with the locomotive and wagons. In summer, trains run from Åtorp, and the museum at Bangårdsvägen in Munkedal is open on certain days. Before Christmas the popular Tomte Train (Tomtetåget) runs, and the association is working, among other things, on a model railway from the mill to the harbour.
