About the museum
Sveriges Sjömanshusmuseum is in Uddevalla, in a house built after the town fire of 1806. The building from 1810 was taken over in 1864 by Uddevalla seamen’s house (sjömanshus) and was used as an office and residence for the ship broker. The seamen’s house activity continued in the building until 1969.
The museum opened to the public in 1995 on the initiative of local heritage associations and is run by Stiftelsen Sveriges sjömanshusmuseum (Sweden’s Seamen’s House Museum Foundation). It is the country’s only preserved seamen’s enrolment house, with a period-furnished enrolment office where seamen once signed on.
The exhibitions deal with life on board, the significance of the seamen’s houses, the shipping companies and the merchant navy, and seafarers’ fates during the Second World War. The house includes, among other things, a captain’s saloon and a re-created crew mess. The museum holds a research archive with enrolment rolls, registration documents and a ship register of nearly 10,000 vessels from 1891 onwards; the archive and the reference library can be used on site during opening hours.
