About the museum

The iron ore deposit at Nartorp was discovered in the early 1800s. Mining took place between 1817 and 1927, and until 1911 the mine was owned by various interests. It was then bought by a German company, which operated it until it closed. Over the years about 300,000 tonnes of iron ore were extracted, most of which was shipped to Germany. The mining area consists of seven shafts; the deepest, a test shaft, reached 440 metres, but no ore was mined deeper than the 375-metre level. A 6-kilometre aerial ropeway was built in 1912–1913 by a Norwegian construction company and was closed together with the mine in December 1927.

The Nartorp–Börrums hembygdsförening (Nartorp–Börrum Local Heritage Society) was formed in 1979 to build knowledge about the mining village that once existed in Nartorp, collect objects and document people's life stories. The Malmkullen local heritage homestead by road 210 towards S:t Anna has a small museum upstairs with donated objects such as forestry and farming tools, fishing and mining equipment, furniture, books and photographs. There is also a model of Nartorp during the mining period in the 1920s, which six members of the association built in the early 1990s from materials including polystyrene foam, matchsticks and piano wire.
