About the museum
The building by Kuddby church was built in 1823–1825 as a parish granary (sockenmagasin) for grain. The parish granary was closed in 1852, and the house was later converted into a poorhouse (fattigstuga) and an old people's home (ålderdomshem). After Åkerlidens ålderdomshem (Åkerlid Old People's Home) was completed in 1933, the premises were used from 1934 to 1973 as a school, a craft room (slöjdsal) and a school kitchen.
In 1974 Björkekinds hembygdsförening (Björkekind Local Heritage Society) and the municipality agreed that the society could use the house as a local history museum, and the museum was inaugurated the same year. The municipality paid for the exterior renovation and the society for the interior.
The museum is furnished with gifts from farms in the vicinity and from the home economics adviser (hemkonsulent) Rut Wallensteen-Jaeger. The collection tells of life in the district in farming, crafts, administration and school. The society was formed in 1946 and operates in the parishes of Kuddby, Å, Konungsund and Östra Ny in western Vikbolandet.
