About the museum
Salfvedal is first mentioned in 1320 and was already an established farm in the Middle Ages. In 1712 it was a crown farm, and in 1817 it is recorded as a coaching inn (gästgivargård). The inn was a post-horse station: in 1825 the farm kept two horses, and in 1844 the innkeeper was to be able to provide four horses, two at once and two within an hour. The horse service was closed down in 1875, resumed in 1883 and disappeared from the coaching-inn lists the following year.
The main house burned down in 1965, and its foundations remain. Of the farm, what remains is the cellar storehouse (källarboden), the cattle barn (ladugården), the loge (log building) and the brewhouse (brygghuset). The cellar storehouse is probably the farm's finest storehouse, built of timber that, according to dendrochronology, was felled in 1558–1559. The western part of the cattle barn is built of timber from 1714–1715 and the eastern part of timber from 1788–1789. The loge was built around the 1790s. The brewhouse was moved from the neighbouring village of Salve and now serves as a coffee house.
Yxnerums hembygdsförening (Yxnerum Local Heritage Society) looks after the site. The coffee house was extended for visitors and inaugurated on 8 June 2014, and visitor numbers have risen every year. The association also keeps a photo album with 212 black-and-white pictures of farms and crofts that belonged to the Burenskölds fideikommiss (the Burenskölds entailed estate).
