About the museum

Nevishögs smedja (smithy) lies by Nevishög church, just outside the town of Staffanstorp. The smithy has existed since the early 1800s, and the present smithy building was erected in 1836. It is an intact and fully working village smithy which, with its rammed earth floor and the lack of extensive electrification, is counted as one of Skåne's oldest and best-preserved.

Staffanstorps Hembygdsförening (Staffanstorp local heritage society) was founded in 1965 precisely to acquire and preserve the smithy unchanged. The association renovated it extensively in the early 1990s, and the smithy was reinaugurated in 1995. An outbuilding with a shoeing stall, a hut (loge) and a cowshed was added in 1922–1923, and the smithy and the old smith's dwelling, Smestuan, have been joined together.

The smithy is kept in use on the association's Smedjedag (Smithy Day), which forms part of Kulturarvsdagen in September. The smith then works at the hearth (ässja), and coffee and waffles are served. Smestuan has been renovated into a community hall that is rented out.
